Forces.

What is a force? A force is doing something. We do things everyday for e.g.

Twisting,

Squeezing,

Turning,

Tearing,

Lifting,

Pushing,

Pulling,

Stretching,

Bending.

These are forces, created by doing something.

These are the forces we do everyday, but some forces happen naturally.

Raining, is a pulling force, and a waterfall falling down is also a pulling force.

Pulled by what?

It is pulled by gravity. Pulled towards the Earth.

Other e.g. of natural pulling forces are:

Snowing and hail storming,

Rivers flowing,

What about Apples falling down from the trees?

Can anybody give me some other examples of natural forces? Perhaps write them down. ------- ----------- ---------------?

Did you know that?

A little boy was sitting under an apple tree

Looking at the beautiful cloudy blue sky.

Then all of a sudden,

An apple fell on his head,

Then he said, “ I know why it fell,

Because of gravity .”

Does anybody know what I’m talking about? Or who that little boy was?

The little boy was Isaac Newton, but later he was named Sir Isaac Newton, by the King at that time, for his great discovery.

Can anybody tell me what that discovery was?

It was the discovery of gravity. Sometimes we call it gravitational force, indicated by a symbol, which is a little ‘g’ in your science books. You might not have it now, but soon when you get to secondary school in 2007.

Trains are also doing a force a pushing force.

Planes have a pushing force as well as they are flying up in the sky.

There is a poem about Sir Isaac Newton, the scientist who discovered gravity, it goes like this:

An apple fell on Newton’s head,

Moved downwards from the tree,

And that was when Sir Isaac said:

“The force is gravity.”

He went to school like any normal child, but later he became an eminent scientist, and discovered a force called gravity.

Write down the names of some people who have been honoured by the Queen Elizabeth 2 nd for their service. I know some people, David Beckham, Sir Alex Ferguson, they are footballers. What about any scientists? Write down one or two names. Have you written them down? I am sure you haven’t done it, come on get on with it.

What can the forces do? Remember these are coming up in your SATS Exams, be prepared right now.

The forces can change the speed of an object.

The forces can change the direction of a moving object.

It can also change the size or shape of an object.

Weight is also a force. The weight is the force of gravity due to the pull of the Earth. This is the force that is pulling downwards now. It pulls towards the centre of the Earth.

A Parachutist has two forces, one is upward force due to air pressure and the other is? Come on somebody tell me?

A rock climber hanging from a rock has two force acting on him, one is the rope pulling upwards, what is the other force? Again somebody tell me, quick!

A weight lifter has two forces acting on him, one is the weight of the metal and the other force is? I am asking it again, what is it? I need an answer, right now, before your SATS.

How do we measure forces?

Forces are measured in units called newtons, by the symbol N. This is to honour whom? That is the force is measured in Newtons, as I said this is to honour the founder, who discovered the force of gravity?

So watch out for more work, more Questions and Answers. Remember I made this simple and fun to learn, interesting to learn. My work has no coloured pictures, not even black and white. My work is mainly for your Exam that takes place somewhere in May 2007, what is the name? If you don’t know find out right now!!!
