Periodic table
1] Give a description of the periodic table.
Answer: The periodic table of elements are arranged in the increasing order of atomic numbers. When the elements are arranged this way, they fall into vertical rows called Groups and horizontal rows called periods. There are eight Groups and seven periods but for GCSE purpose you only need to know up to period three.
Some Groups have their own name, for example, Group 1 is called the alkali metals and Group 2 are called alkali earth metals, Group 7 is the halogen Group and Group 8 (also known as Group zero) is the inert gas Group. Between Group 2 and three there is a block of metals called the d block elements also known as transition elements.
The Group number is also the valency of an element, this is true up to group four then from group 5 the valency is 8 minus the group number. For example the valency of group 5 is 3 and group 6 is two and group 7 is one then inert gases are zero valency. {To be continued}
